Water Diplomacy for Peace and Sustainable Development in the MENA Region
Over the coming decades, water scarcity will arguably present the biggest socio-political challenge to the countries of the Arab region. Out of 33 countries ranked by the World Resources Institute as the world’s most water stressed in 2040, 16 are Arab countries. Water scarcity becomes an acute issue when countries do not have the financial or technical means (such as seawater desalination) to overcome it: the region’s countries that suffer from poverty and political conflict, such as Yemen and Syria, are among the most affected in this regard. Unsatisfactory agreements around transboundary water resources can also be perceived as future threats to water security, as the case of the Nile River Basin has demonstrated.
